A new look at criminal behavior in the Ivies
Friends of the show know we don’t exactly think of the Ivy League as the be all-end all of real intellectual culture in this country. Yet out there in the world, places like Harvard and Yale — often little more than glorified tax-evading hedge funds that post endowments the size of small nations’ GDPs, and award degrees to the next generation of the élite — have a pretty good rap for churning out future leaders, people fit to take the reins of the free world.
There’s a lot to unpack there. But we’ll start with a fascinating story by TV host and writer Touré: his recent book The Ivy League Counterfeiter, which reveals how someone with “all the opportunities in the world” went on from his prep school and Columbia education to pursue illegal riches. Touré analyzes court documents and interviews with his former classmate and friend whose counterfeiting work led him into a “criminal underground” that seemed to contradict what he’d been raised to do.
In our discussion with Touré, we’ll learn more about the Ivy League Counterfeiter, asking how those with immense opportunities and expectations fall into criminal schemes — and what kind of behavior élite Ivy League circles actually allow. "friends of the show know"... i've watched long enough to see plenty of instances where krystal won't even speak to ppl she deems as non-intellectual-- basically all those who forgo fancy thoughts and actions. i feel so let down by these two this year. they have slid closer towards establishment thought and ideology. in their boston show they didn't even mention how wrong the gov was wrong on covid, didn't mention the word recession once and praised biden for getting things done, not mentioning that the majority of what he did was either continuation of trump policy or temporary! fm
