The start of this week marked the beginning of the Colombian presidential elections. According to coverage from Democracy Now!, the current leader of the race is leftist Gustavo Petro, the former mayor of Bogotá who has promised to take on wealth inequality. He’s up against a classic far-right opponent — wealthy Trumpian real-estate businessman Rodolfo Hernández, who has made no secret of his links to fascism. Petro and others have highlighted this election as an opportunity to break with the corrupt, violent past of the right-wing governments that went before. Hopefully, the outcome will turn the tides against years of US-backed militarism in Colombia — and offer a leftist government the chance to invest in the public.
To discuss the possibilities and look at the history behind this election, we’re bringing on Toby Muse, a writer and filmmaker who has focused much of his work on Colombian politics. This work includes the book Kilo: Inside the Cocaine Cartels, video reporting for the New York Times on the Colombian guerrilla group FARC, and more. As we cover the latest developments in the Colombian election, as well as other current events at home and abroad, we hope you’ll tune in and join us.
