I think AI is tricky when it comes to mistreatment. some learn off the user's behavior in addition to content fed directly in. also, we don't know how humans became sentient (if we even are). it could be an emergent process that occurs over a huge amount of time, but humans aren't really that special or complicated. yes, we don't fully understand the brain and consciousness itself, but as far as what people do day to day, I think we're not far.
