Wherever you are in the world, we hope you’re staying safe and cool. The last few weeks have brought uninhabitable temperatures, destruction of homes and nature, and, unforgettably, an ocean on fire.
Of all the people to point out this catastrophe, it’s apt that among them is Gavin Newsom, California governor — an official with real power to hold corporations accountable for climate destruction, but with financial interests that instead make him an enabler to these corporations and an enemy to “climate action.”
Put Newsom’s hand-wringing and permit-signing right beside every establishment Democrat tweeting “Tax the rich” or “Cancel student debt” before conceding to Republicans in spending deals. And, of course, let the story of the ocean on fire be a meaningful testament to the urgency of the Green New Deal — the shift to renewable energy alongside public ownership of the energy sector.
After Lytton, a city in British Columbia, reported the record-setting temperature of 121 degrees Fahrenheit, the town was destroyed by fire, displacing over 1000 people and killing at least two. As parts of the Pacific Northwest sweltered under a “heat dome,” too, those without access to housing or decent cooling systems faced the greatest danger. Emergency rooms filled up, at least fifteen people died in Seattle’s King County, the British Columbia ambulance system was hit with a backlog of calls. We know it doesn’t have to be this way. So does Gavin Newsom — and so do the companies that continue to put us in this position. For our own survival, we need a change.
