Ladies and gentlemen, they got him. Trump was arrested earlier today; he faces 37 charges of alleged document mishandling. He’s pleading not guilty to the charges, which center around unlawful possession of defense info and hiding documents from a DOJ probe. This makes Trump the first president to face both criminal and federal charges, which he’s calling a “witch hunt.” The escalation of this case leaves us with plenty of questions about its effects on American politics both immediately and moving toward the 2024 election. Over at the NYT, they have Trump as the all-but-certain Republican nominee. How will the timeline of the case overlap with the timeline of the election, and what could the results be?
Taking a step back, how has our understanding of the allegations against Trump evolved, and what do the allegations tell us about the threat Trump poses to national security? To tackle this seminal question, we’re bringing back lawyer Brad Moss, an expert on classified documents who can lead us through this fascinating case. Also, just watched Arnold on Netflix. Strong peace message at the end of the last episode. (Set up in earlier episodes.) Really impressive use of modern media consumption to change the world in real time. Bravo.
