Listen now | This week’s guest, TJ Kirk, gets us to think about atheism, nihilism, morality, and the social role of religion. You might know TJ from his YouTube presence as The Amazing Atheist, where he’s discussed his atheist perspective in front of millions of viewers. Kyle’s conversation with this week’s guest gives us the opportunity to reconsider conventional takes on our value systems: on the topic of nihilism, TJ makes the case that forgoing a greater meaning behind our existence doesn’t require giving up a personal sense of purpose and appreciation of life. In fact, rethinking or freeing ourselves from moral codes that don’t improve our lives might give us the opportunity to find our real purpose, rather than to follow the one that is ascribed to us.
As a Christian, it's a shame that religious organizations are the physical representation of all belivers in the eyes of the secular world. I can assure you, however, that there are faithful who actually embody the principles of Jesus's earthly ministry; people who believe that we are, in fact, all created in God's image as opposed to what modern day religious movements would have you believe. The new testament dispensation (which we are in now) sealed by Jesus's death on the cross points to two great commandments: Love the Lord your God above all else, and LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOU LOVE YOURSELF. Regardless of preference or ideology, all people deserve to live life to the fullest. If you operate outside of those commandments as a believer, then I believe that that is hypocritical.
I love the show and am a huge fan of you both. I just wanted to point out the distinction between religion and true faith, as it pertains to Christianity. I am certain that this same dichotomy exists in other belief systems around the world as well.
